Fall brings on the most anticipated time of the year. Our foliage is second to none when color pallets emerge from over a dozen species of trees. Taking the scenic chairlift to the top of the mountain and then hiking over to Bald Knob is a must. During winter months, get outside and experience Canaan Valley Ski Area's 47 ski slopes. With an average of 150 inches of snow a year enthusiasts enjoy a true winter experience while in Canaan Valley. A 1,200 foot tubing park keeps the fun coming for all.

Canaan Valley Resort also offers hosted events throughout the year such as Celebration of the Arts and Wind Fest. Weekly scheduled activities cater to all ages and abilities. A favorite is guided hikes hosted by their recreation staff.

Outdoor Recreation


There are 18 miles of various hiking trails to choose from. Most trails are less than two miles but many are interconnected for extra miles. Access to the Canaan Mountain Backcountry and Blackwater Falls State Park are located near the main Lodge. Take the scenic chairlift for access to Bald Knob trail at the top of the ski resort.

Canaan Valley has always been known for it's Mountain Biking. Hit trails within Canaan Valley State Park or venture into the Canaan back-country via the Allegheny Trail. Recently a brand new 5.5 mile purpose-built, beginner/novice mountain bike trail called Promised Lands Trail was constructed. Take a cruise along the parks miles of paved roads for subtle riding on two wheels. Cruiser bikes are available for rent through the recreation center.

Sporting Clays

Take your best shot at clay pigeons on the vast range located at Canaan Valley Resort Ski Area. Archery has also been recently added to round out a solid day on the range. Anyone 18 years old+ can make a reservation or simply walk-in to schedule a session. Also kids aged 12-17 can take part in this worthwhile activity if accompanied by an adult.

Wildlife Watching

Canaan Valley Golf Course features a driving range, practice green, pro shop and club house. Sight Seeing

Whether it is wildlife viewing or landscape photography in fields of wildflowers, nature is abundant and at your fingertips when staying at Canaan Valley Resort. Within the park you will find the headwaters of the Blackwater River, a large population of Whitetail Deer, and active beaver ponds. Located at the Canaan Valley Resort Ski Area is the ever popular scenic chairlift, taking you up 800 feet to expansive overlooks high above Canaan Valley. Fall foliage is the highlight of the year when it comes to scenic chairlift rides. Our dazzling colors typically peak during the first 10 days of October with a window of opportunity of over a month.

Wheeling Symphony Orchestra Plays Canaan Valley Resort State Park every July 4th.


Various events take place whether celebrating July 4th or coming up for a weekend of winter fun on the ski slopes. Centerpiece events like the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra outdoor concert and Leaf Peepers Festival Golf Tournament are favorite annual events. Weekly events fill Saturdays and Sundays with family oriented activities. Summer brings on several guided hikes led by staff extremely knowledgeable on the natural surroundings found in and above Canaan Valley. A don’t miss is the Walk Between the Parks. Hike from Canaan Valley State Park up and over Canaan Mountain Backcountry to Blackwater Falls State Park and return via shuttle bus to Canaan Resort.

The Hickory Dining Room is Canaan Valley Resort's premiere dining area with a panoramic view of Canaan Valley and Cabin Mountain. Get morning started off right with Seasons Café and pick up a sandwich to go for a rewarding lunch after hiking to Bald Knob. Happy hour, grub-food specials and evening shenanigans are found at the recently renovated Laurel Lounge.

Choose from two bedroom, three bedroom and four bedroom family cabins or four bedroom cottages. All cabins and cottages have wood burning fireplaces, grills, picnic table, linens and furnished kitchens.
