The year, 1982.  Blackwater Bikes grand opening in their apartment in Davis, WV is overshadowed by the debut of “Late Night with David Lettermen” and Ozzy Osbourne biting the head off a bat on stage in Des Moines, Iowa.  Dave’s out.  Ozzy is hanging on by a thread.  Blackwater Bikes is still all in, pedal to the metal, in fact it appears the new owner, Rob Stull, is standing on it!

After 15 years as proprietor and Tucker County supreme bike guru, Rodger Lilly has turned over the reigns of Blackwater Bikes for freedom and at least one dollar.  Rest assured about your bicycles health, Rodger is staying on as mechanic.  On June 1, 2015 Rob, his wife Shannon, and daughter Delaney inherited a reputation that took 33yrs to make.  Now this family’s outlook is not one of complacency, goal #1, rise to a higher level.

Step one, inventory evaluation.  You will notice a big difference on the stocked walls, it’s the full quiver for the modern mtn. biker’s daily needs.  Salsa Bicycle’s and Zoic clothing have infiltrated Blackwater Bikes front door.  This coming winter, plans are to offer indoor cycling, aka spinning”, a cardiovascular, butt-kicking workout, as well as yoga for cyclist.  In 2016 Rob hopes to offer skills clinics and guided tours that include guaranteed bear sightings, no up hills, and free beer.  Ok, so the last tid-bit is beyond facetious, but did it get your attention?  This family is for real!

It’s not about the bottom dollar, it’s about Delaney, and her twenty other 10 and under friends making up the next generation of hard core mountain bikers.  Weekly kids’ clinics, rides, and events are becoming the norm, and they are OPEN TO ALL.  Blackwater Bikes is also actively sponsoring WVMBA events and on the board of the new IMBA (International Mountain Bike Association) chapter, Blackwater Bicycle Association.

Blogs are not supposed to be boring, fact filled information centers.  But the fact of the matter is that Blackwater Bikes has closed the door on the past, exchanged the engine, and Rob is standing on the throttle.  In this case, the facts are exciting.   For more excitement check out the web site , Facebook Blackwater Bikes and Blackwater Bicycle Association and “Like” it, like it a lot!

Picture yourself here with Blackwater Falls Lodge in the back ground.

Don't worry Anne will remind you to breathe and not to let your mind wander.  It is hard to do with such beautiful scenery.

When the weather is not cooperating and shelter is needed, yoga is held in Thomas at the Thomas Community Center.  The Thomas Education Center is located at 324 Brown Street next to the Catholic Church on the corner of 3rd and Brown Street.

Mountain Yoga offers additional classes throughout the year.  Be sure to check Anne's blog,, for location updates and her class schedule.

July 4th in Tucker County serves up activities that would resemble a Las Vegas buffet, only better, everything is FREE!  Well 99% is free, unless you want to fill your tummy, but did I grab your attention?  The city of Thomas leads Tucker County celebrating July 4th with over 55 years of fireworks and 40 years hosting their home grown Mountaineer Days.  Canaan Valley Resort kicks things off July 2nd and does not let off the gas until their main event, late Sunday afternoon.  This is the icing on the Tucker County cake, all the outdoor activities we are famous for will be in full effect, making for memories and stories that are one of a kind.

You want the small town experience, get to Thomas.  Friday evening head to the Thomas Fire Hall, where one will find the unique opportunity of walking off your hot dog in hopes of earning cake, a full cake at that!  Begin the 12 hours of Thomas on July 4th with “walk and roll for life” charity event at 9:00am.  Things do not stop until the BIG fireworks show once the sun goes down.  Two highlights I would like to mention is the parade at 11:00am and awesome firemen’s water battle on the railroad grade at 2:00pm.  All the information on Mountaineer Days can be found at

The Tucker County Alpine Festival brings you the 25th anniversary of Celebration Of The Arts featuring 25 straight years of the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra.  Take the serenity of Tucker County, add the magical melodies created by the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra, and offer the event free of charge.  Guilt free donations are accepted and highly appreciated.  The stage is located at the Canaan Valley Ski area side (not the lodge side) and begins Sunday July 5th at 2:00pm.  Lawn seating is first come first serve, so come early and bring your blankets, lawn chairs, shade protection and beverages for a relaxing afternoon.  For additional information on all there is to do in Tucker County over the holiday, please go to  and

Canaan Valley resort goes after it as well with guided hikes and horseshoe/corn-hole tournament starting July 2nd.  Friday plays host to a variety of summer camp type activities for all ages from 9am-11pm.  Windfest begins Saturday morning with a kite building workshop, jumbo kite displays, and stunt kite demos throughout the day, the high flying act continues through Sunday.   Additional information is found at

Have a great weekend and HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY USA!

Cheers, Brian
